Site News: YourWarrantyIsVoid.com is now on Facebook!

by on Jun.06, 2010, under Site News

Well, after taking a bit of time to think about the site and all the hard work I’ve put into it, I decided to do some site work and created a Facebook page and a Twitter account so you can be informed of the next update. For facebook click here and for Twitter, follow @WarrantyIsVoid.  I’m still in the process of fleshing out both profiles so it might be a bit, but for now, I’m up and running.

I’ve got a couple of dockstars and really found your dismantle and serial setup posts useful. I especially like the clean serial connection port.

I’d like to take a slightly different tack and install an RJ45 MAX233. The hitch is that I need a 3.5-5V+ input. I could pull it off the inbound RTS/DTR, but I’d prefer to pull the power from the board itself.

(Nevermind that I haven’t checked if there’s space in the box yet…)

You noted the serial GND, TX and RX. How did you determine those? Did you have a manual? A multi-meter or a scope?

I think the header is a 2×5 2mm. I can get those for less than a buck (and then $5 shipping 🙁 ). The MAX233 RJ45 unit is $20, which is the same as either the Nokia cable you used or the Digi-Key.

Several of the pins on the header measure 3.5V+ when compared to the ground. If I can find one that I’m sure is actually a 3.5v constant source I can use it to power the MAX233. With that mounted nicely to the side of the box and a nicely built 2×5 female connector on the header I have a really clean serial output.

This gets me the ability to connect the serial port to a network terminal server, a standard DB9 (with an adaptor) or to my USB serial.

So, again. Do you know if one of those pins is a 3.5 volt source? What was the source of your information?

    You’ve already helped, thanks.
